Exhibition Introduction
Between seeing and being seen, the “self” has never been a stable or independently formed entity.
The Mirror of the Other takes its conceptual starting point from the “mirror stage” theory proposed by Jacques Lacan. According to this theory, one’s perception of the self does not emerge solely from within, but is gradually constructed through relationships with others—their gaze, reflections, and responses.
What we understand as “self” is often a constructed image—formed through continuous misrecognition, fragmentation, and reassembly, always in a state of flux.
In a highly mobile and culturally diverse society, the question of how the self is formed becomes even more complex. Within the Canadian context, shaped by migration and multiculturalism, identity is rarely singular. It is continuously shaped by movement, language, cultural negotiation, and social perception.
We are defined through the eyes of others, while constantly attempting to redefine our own position.
This exhibition brings together diverse artistic practices across painting, video, installation, and more, to explore:
-
How is the self seen?
-
How is the self reconstructed through the act of being seen?
As we observe the world, we are simultaneously observed in return. Art, within this dynamic interplay, opens up new possibilities for understanding the self.
